ASU scrimmage a disaster
8/25/02

Alabama State held it's last scrimmage Saturday before the start of the season. The hornets didn't show any improvements during the scrimmage.  Head coach L.C. Cole doesn't seem to know what the problem is.

“I believe we went backwards on both sides of the ball,” Cole said. “I don’t know what to say. This is getting serious.”

The reason why it is serious is because the Hornets season starts next week against Miles College, a team they should beat

“If we play against Miles College next Sunday the way we played tonight, we’ll get beat,” Cole said. “I’m seriously disappointed in the enthusiasm and effort that I saw out here tonight and really the effort I’ve seen all week.”

The major concern other than being embarrass in the game opener is the play of the defense.

“Those guys have always been the ones flying around to the ball and making plays,” Cole said. “But that energy wasn’t there tonight. Those guys dropped off.”

The play of the offense didn't fair to much better. The quarterbacks Jermaine Crenshaw and Gary Brashears didn't do anything special other than make mental errors.

“They missed a lot of reads and both of them had several miscues,” Cole said. “Their play wasn’t too pleasant to watch.”

The Hornets have less than a week to pull it together. This is a test for coach Cole to see if he can turn the team around  before the Saturday.
