UAPB Pass by Tigers

Arkansas-Pine Bluff 40, Texas Southern 23 (Houston, TX:  Alexander Durley Stadium – 4,500 att.)

While the Tigers score twice in the first period for a 10-6 lead, Arkansas-Pine Bluff got a 41-yard strike from John Pierce to Jason Jones (second TD of the day) and a John Heflin 29-yard field goal to five the Lions a 16-10 lead at halftime.  The second period saw Texas Southern regain the lead on a 32-yard pass play from Darnell Lovett to Tyrone Reed and a Brent Wilson 6-yard run.  With the score 23-16 Tigers, the Lions got a score from its special teams (Andrew Bergeron 24-yard field goal), defense (Clarence Fuller 28-yard fumble recovery) and offense (John Pierce 49-yard run) to seal the 40-23 victory.  Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s John Pierce completed 16-of-31 passes for 265 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while Jason Jones caught seven passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns.  For Texas Southern, Darnell Lovett came off the bench to complete 12-of-20 passes for 180 yards and a TD with 10 rushes for 97 yards.  Brent Wilson had 22 carries for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
