Crenshaw Looks Good in Scrimmage 8/18/02 Quarterback
Jermaine Crenshaw
preformed well in the scrimmage and seems to be holding on for the starting
job at ASU. Crenshaw threw 4-for-6 for 80 yards and led the offense on two
scoring drives.
“I’m about where I need to be and where I thought I would be,” Crenshaw said. “We’re all still gelling as an offensive unit now. I think when it’s said and done, we’ll be better at a lot of spots than we were last year.” In the first scrimmage of the year head coach L.C. Cole held a three and half hour session. “That’s Cole-Blooded football,” linebacker Al Walker said. “We haven’t ever had a scrimmage go less than two and half hours.” The defense looks as good as the offense forming a nice little balance. Balance is what the coaches are looking for around the SWAC this preseason. “The defense looks good,” said Cole. “We have a few depth issues to work out but that’s about all. They’re going to be what carries us.” Offensive coordinator Johnie Cole is still evaluating the quarterback situation. Crenshaw is in a constant battle with Gary Brashears for the position. The competition is stiff and the players are stepping up to the challenge. “I thought I did some good things and I thought I did some bad things,” Brashears said. “The more familiar I get with everyone on the team, the more I’m able to be a leader out there. But right now I’m still trying to learn the offense.” Offensive coordinator Johnie Cole had some good and bad things to say about the players performance. “Jermaine made better reads but Gary threw the ball a little better,” he said. “Jermaine set us up in the right blocking formations and hit some passes but he also threw a lot in the dirt. “I’m pleased with the progress Gary is making but he’s not as familiar with the offense as Jermaine. You’ve got to keep in mind that Gary has only been here a week. He’s learned a tremendous amount in that week but it’s still to early to push him very hard. You have to give him time to learn.” Can you smell a quarterback controversy?
