Grambling Newcomers Show Promise
8/7/02

Head Coach Doug Williams is overly pleased with the performance of the newcomers. He believes some can help the team in near future and may challenge some veterans for starting spots.

"This is going to be an interesting preseason," Williams said. "We have several positions open and we have some talented older guys and some talented newcomers fighting for playing time."

The defense will be helped out a lot from the newcomers providing solid depth. The linebackers have caught the eye of some coaches as well as the defensive backs.

"There are a couple of defensive backs who can really help our secondary too. This is a talented bunch of newcomers." Williams said.

The problem with the newcomers providing depth for the defense is these same player won't redshirt. Redshirting gives a player time to grow and gain football knowledge, not to mention a extra year. This is the problem with getting transfers from other schools. They graduate early and you never get a long term player. A redshirted freshman can give you that. Williams is rolling the dice toying with the idea of playing freshman. It could hurt them in the long run.
