Band Report

Labor Day Classic- TSU vs. PV
8/31/03 by Veronica Baker

Welcome back Band Fans!!! The Band Report is now up and running for the 2003 Football Season.  To kick it off Prairie View met Texas Southern in Reliant Stadium for the 2003 Labor Day Classic.

First, Reliant Stadium had a few glitches in their seating arrangements for the band because Prairie View didn’t have enough space to sit down therefore they had to wait about twenty minutes for the stands to clear and for them to get situated.

Prairie Views’ half-time performance was showcased once again by their drum section, which is by far the best in the SWAC.  Their melodies included “Can You Stand the Rain” by Peabo Bryson, “Shake a Tail Feather”, and “Hooker, Hooker”.

Texas Southern’s overall performance was much more enjoyable this year.  There first song was the all time favorite, “Talking Out the Side of Your Neck” by Cameo. Then they went on to play two more songs by Earth Wind & Fire while the Motion of the Ocean danced.  TSU also played “Crazy in Love” by Beyonce and “In Those Jeans” by Ginuwine.  During the Ginuwine song, a female danced in front the band with a jean cat suit on.  The band played “Get Low” and “Hooker, Hooker”. A rap artist (maybe the actual person who raps the record) came out to perform with them, but the half-time clock had since run out so YOU know how that goes.  The guy said a line or so and that was it.

In addition to the band performance, chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma from Prairie View and Texas Southern met during the second half to step and meet members in each other's bands.

This year, Texas Southern entertained more and had the audience’s attention.  It didn’t hurt that the football teamed ran the score up on Prairie View in the last two quarters.
