SU Homecoming
Weekend vs. Alabama A&M In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Jaguars hosted the Bulldogs in their 2003 Homecoming Weekend. In the mist of the sprinkling rain, the Human Jukebox put on an outstanding performance. To begin the game, Smiley High School out of Houston, Texas played for the entrances of Southern’s Homecoming Court and for a high school band playing in front of thousands of college spectators, they were great. Overall, Alabama A&M played a few songs in the stands but due to the homecoming atmosphere in Baton Rouge, several songs were booed and Southern’s band would outplay them on the next round. During A&M’s half-time routine, their five drum majors entered the field and the band played “Let’s Groove Tonight” while the male twirler performed gracefully for everyone. They also played “Choppa Style”, “Throw it Up”, “I Like the Way You Move” by OutKast, and ended their routine with “Outstanding” by the Gap Band. As Southern took the field the crowd howled as “Showtime” Baker, the drum major” stepped onto the field. To show A&M up, Southern began their routine by also playing “I Like the Way You Move”, but did a much better job while in a crisp diamond formation. As the moved from the EA Sports formation into the SU formation, they played the fight song then started into Michael Jackson’s “Working Day and Night” as the Dancing Dolls performed. What really took the cake that night was when one of the bandsmen came out to sing “Turn Out the Lights” by Teddy Pendergrass and the whole stadium fell out. They ended their routine by playing “Step in the Name of Love” by R Kelly the alumni’s favorite, “I’m So Glad I Go to Southern U”. By far, Southern’s routine was best they’ve given in years and the best this season. Way to go Southern.
