The Marching Storm Battles the Human Jukebox
9/20/04 by Veronica Baker

In the much-anticipated football game between 2-0 Prairie View and 1-1 Southern, the latter prevailed as always and shut PV’s ballgame down before halftime.  But the same cannot be said for Prairie View’s Marching Storm band performance.

The hosting band showed up fearlessly inside the stadium playing songs by Brandy and L.L. Cool J.  After SU’s first touchdown, the Marching Storm butted in before the Jukebox could play their fight song that angered several of the band members and fans alike from Southern.  During halftime, they began with “Until You Come Back to Me” by Aretha Franklin and later played “Let It Whip” while the Black Foxes performed.  PV’s band literally showed more heart and action than the football team by including flips and acrobatic moves into their drum line like nothing the fans have ever seen.

The Jukebox produced a terrific sounding brass section and answered each song the Marching Storm produced.  Lead onto the field by drum major Lewis Broadway, the Jukebox played “Lean Back” by Fat Joe along with other audience favorites.  This year, Southern only has five Dancing Dolls, but where they lack numbers they make up with an abundance of beauty and talent.

Overall, Southern gives the classic crowd-pleasing performance but Prairie View is innovative and continues to bring new material to the field each time they perform.
