Southern has "Locks" of Troubles
by C.R. Baker Sr. 9/9/02

A wise man once said that your only as strong as your weakest link. It is obvious that the weakest link on the Jaguars is the offensive line. The Jags have gave up 13 sacks in the past two games and have gotten two quarterbacks hurt. Northwestern State's Roy Lock got to the quarterback 4 times alone Saturday. To add to troubles of the offensive line is the fact they had a hard time blocking the blitz and slants the Demons provided.  Once again the effects of preseason camp has com into play. The starting offensive line rarely practiced together due various reasons. The O-line has to gel and gel in hurry to get the Jags on track.

The defense didn't do too much better as the Demons racked up 299 yards rushing. The Demons played ball control and southern off the field, but when the Jags were stuffed. The running game was shut down by the Demons swarming defense.

"I'm disappointed in the performance of my football team, certainly our effort," Coach Richardson said. "It was a hard lesson for them to learn. We're not going to beat any football team until we start executing on both sides of the ball.

The only thing that kept the Jags in the game was the connection between Fisher and wideout Michael Hayes. Hayes had 186 yards receiving and two touchdowns. This added to Fisher's numbers of 24-for-44 for 297 yards.

The mental mistakes and play of the offensive line are what killing the Jags. All the Jags turnovers were converted into points which stalled all come back attempts.

"I'm concerned about our mental mistakes," Richardson said. "Every time we made a mistake, they came back and scored."
