Band Report

Texas Southern Homecoming Weekend
10/21/03 Veronica Baker

Texas Southern barely beat Alcorn State for their homecoming this weekend but the band showed out nonetheless.

The “Ocean of Soul” began with the drum majors popping out of coffins on the field as they played Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.  The female dancers “The Motion of the Ocean” performed in tiger-skinned leotards to the signature African theme from Coming to America

After the dancers and twirlers left the field, the band moved into box formation and played “I Like The Way You Move” by OutKast, the intro to “I Need Love” and “Push It” to represent the old school. They ended their routine with “Step In The Name of Love” by R.Kelly.

Too bad, Alcorn’s band didn’t come from Lorman down to Houston for a real battle of the bands.  However, TSU better watch out for Southern this November because the “Human Jukebox” is definitely making the trip from Baton Rouge.

Personal note: I guess OutKast, Beyonce, and R.Kelly are going to get the most play from all the SWAC bands this season.  Let’s see what other popular songs surface for the 2003 season.
